QE Facilities (QEF) is proud to support Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust in a major redevelopment project that will enhance care for women, children, and young people across the region.
Work is well underway to convert two former inpatient wards at QE Hospital into modern, purpose-built facilities including a new Colposcopy Department and a Children and Young People’s Department. This transformation, which began in January 2025, is being led by QEF on behalf of the Trust, with support from principal contractor Robertson Group and a multidisciplinary design and engineering team.
Set within the hospital’s historic 1930s building, the project has required extensive enabling works to modernise the original structure. Mechanical and electrical installations are progressing well, with internal finishes and decoration due to begin later this year. The new departments are expected to open in Autumn 2025.
QEF plays a central role in the successful delivery of this project, acting as the single point of contact between clinical users, the Estates team, contractors, and third-party consultants. From procurement to project oversight, QEF ensures effective coordination, clear communication, and the resolution of any issues that arise. The in-house technical team also supports the review of design proposals and compliance with healthcare standards. This integrated approach helps maintain high-quality delivery, stay on programme, and achieve best value.
Once complete, the redevelopment will provide patients with greater privacy, comfort, and access to services in a welcoming, therapeutic environment. The children’s area will include calming design elements and dedicated play areas to support younger patients, many of whom will be visiting hospital for the first time. The upgraded Colposcopy Department will offer a more dignified and modern care environment for women accessing these important services.
Gavin Evans, Managing Director of QEF, said: “We’re proud to play a key role in delivering this important project on behalf of the Trust. Our teams are committed to ensuring this redevelopment meets the highest standards and supports better outcomes for patients, families, and staff.”
Trudie Davies, Chief Executive of Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This is a really exciting development for the Trust and our community. Providing child-friendly, reassuring spaces for young patients and a dignified environment for women attending colposcopy services are key steps in ensuring every visit feels safer, more comfortable, and more supportive.”
The Trust has also embedded social value commitments within the delivery of the project. All contractors were required to demonstrate meaningful commitments to local employment, skills development, community engagement, and environmental sustainability. Robertson CE Ltd, the principal contractor, is currently hosting a local college student on site and is actively managing construction waste through the SmartWaste system.
QEF continues to work closely with the Trust to deliver facilities that support high-quality care, better patient experience, and lasting community benefit.
