Summary
A dedicated Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit was created in a vacated ward near gynaecology, replacing a distressing shared space. Designed with staff around patient dignity, the £930,000 project opened May 2026 on time and budget, improving privacy and enabling faster emergency care.

“Early pregnancy complications need to have a dedicated and appropriate setting for assessment and management, and we recognised this was severely lacking at the QE over recent years. The move to the new location, now adjacent to the gynaecology ward, will really improve our ability to care for people suffering with miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy and other early pregnancy issues. The focus was primarily around patient safety in the first instance but having a calm and dedicated area will also improve the patient experience, at what can be a traumatic and challenging time for patients and their partners.
This investment will make a massive difference for the current service but also opens the door to developing aspects of early pregnancy care in the future. We really valued the ability, as clinicians, to be part of the process from the beginning, being involved the decisions on the layout, design and set up of the area, the equipment procured, and the patient journey through our clinical area, working with the project manager, Vikki Pooley, and the team at Robertsons CE Ltd. We are passionate about getting this right, and the new area is a massive step forward for Early Pregnancy care at the QE.”
